Trays, Cases, and Racks: Are Bakery Displays Right For You?

My sister, who's a pastry chef, once said to me: "Your baked goods need to be able to sell themselves based on their merits alone, but don't skimp on the display either. If you're selling a glutton pastry, are the customers surely going to want to see it sitting out there on some cheap and flimsy paper plate?" This statement kept coming back to me as I was researching this article. The more I plan about it, the more it made sense to me. You're a baker who puts so much time and care into cakes, pastries, cookies, tartlets, and other culinary creations; wouldn't you want to display them in the best way possible to make them look even more attractive? Probably. Luckily, there are quite a few options out there for bakeries, supermarkets, and other food assistance places to select from to display their treats.

Food display cases that are made from acrylic are a commonly spotted option. Acrylic building helps to keep the contained foods fresh and protected from any exterior contaminants. Acrylic is lighter and stronger than glass, development it a safer selection for places with high customer traffic. These display cases can often be found in a number of sizes, allowing you to fit a colossal number of baked goods inside. The internal trays are height adjustable, so if you have something that isn't fitting in quite as easily, just shift the shelf to a lower notch to free up some clearance. Front and rear doors with hinges make it easy to load up the case, as well as providing self-service entrance to customers. While many displays have an entirely clear construction, some have a more stylish look with wooden tops and bottoms, or black aluminum edging on the outside.

If the entirely clear building is something you're finding for out of a case, there are models out there that are called bagel or pastry bins. These bins are less organized inside than the cases mentioned previously, consisting of one (1) large space instead. The bins commonly highlight a hinged lid for easy access, and can be stacked to originate a larger setup. As the name implies, these cases are great for bagels, however they could also be used for rolls and breads - basically any sort of baked good that doesn't crumble easily. A bagel store could keep a number of these on hand behind the register so that they have freshly baked items on hand on busier days. Of course, bins will also work well with determined non-food products too.

Being able to see the food available for buy while holding it protected is pretty much a necessity for any bakery. A tray is an exquisite way to cover both of those points. Trays can be found in many materials, although acrylic is, once again, a popular selection as it's strong enough to withstand a lot of use, such as the type you'd find in a store. The trays have a number of shapes (round, square, even triangular!) and can sometimes have patterns and designs worked into the acrylic for a little extra style. Some even highlight pedestal stands for an upscale look that's still quite practical. These trays are good for both hot and cold foods. There are models out there that have a two (2) layer construction, allowing you to put ice in the lowest tray to keep food cool (which is great for shrimp cocktail, a stalwart at my family's very Italian and very primary Christmas eves). One thing to make sure of is that your tray has a cover with either a lid or a door. This will keep your baked goods fresh, yet still allow easy access.

What about for baked goods that are pre-packaged, where you'd like a little more room to display a bag of rolls or cookies instead of just an private item for sale? If that's what you're finding for, a wicker basket may be the display tool you need. The baskets also highlight a collection of shapes and sizes, from small tabletop trays to larger bins. The baskets are often made from either natural willow or polypropylene plastic. The willow baskets are handmade, and often highlight natural variations in coloring. They're great for giving any store a real cozy and comfortable sort of atmosphere. Polypropylene baskets have a more uniform appearance, and are stronger and slightly more affordable than the natural willow models. Also, the plastic models can be used outside, so if you're taking your bakery to a farmers' market, this may be the display to choose. Baskets are a suitable display, one that doesn't just have to be used for food - although food is all the time a popular choice! We use wicker baskets in my house to put snacks and other appetizers in for holidays and other house gatherings. I have a lot of family, so there's often a lot of baskets spread out on the kitchen's island and dinner table. But since baskets are quite affordably priced, it's worth it to stock up.

If you're in a commercial or retail setting, the wicker baskets above can be used in conjunction with metal racks. However, these racks work just as well on their own as a bakery display, especially for pre-wrapped goods. Racks can be found in both counter top and floor models, and are often seen with polished silver or powder coated black finishes. Some are styled as particular baskets with attractive patterns and scrolls worked into the sides (think what the pre-meal bread arrives in at a restaurant), while others are trays with two (2) or three (3) shelves. The racks with shelves are great for encouraging impulse buys when settled by a register. Taller models, such as the five-footer plus with six (6) shelves, are also available online. Bakers could surely take advantage of those models with their wheels and colossal space for many loaves of bread, bags of cookies, or even boxed cakes.

Bakers, pastry chefs, and other cooks spend so much time, effort, and money creating the most gorgeous and appetizing goods possible. So why not give them the best pastry showcase possible? Take a look at what type of bakers' racks and cases are out there, and inspect which one will give your goods the display they deserve!
